Every once in a while, we are asked to help a school with either a lesson on American culture, our education system or certain holidays. Sometimes, we are even asked to do a small version of English Camp for their students. I helped out with one such camp a few weeks ago that was for Juniors in high school. It was weird not being in charge of the whole thing and the students treated us like we were teachers, which meant they kept us at a distance and opened up very slowly. One girl who was in my class asked me, "Do you not like our teachers or something?" when I sat down to have lunch with her. She just didn't get why an adult like me would care to get to know her. And I understand why because during the whole camp, the teachers did their own thing and were only there to keep things in order. Sad but true. But one success during the week was getting the teachers to play Bunco with the students on the last night! They were actually having fun together! We are praying to continue these relationships with teachers and model for them ways to engage with their students.

That is such a cool story! I can't believe I didn't read this sooner! Sheeeesh. :) I'm not surprised the kids weren't used to "hanging out" with their adult teachers. When I join in on a game during recess, the kids are always surprised and get so excited -- tons of other kids usually end up joining the game! :) They love adult attention and interaction! (even middle schoolers would, I bet..) :)
ReplyDeleteI'm thankful you are there to be able to model what it looks like to be a caring, friendly and fun adult who interacts with young people. God is using you, Stephanie!! :)
Love ya!
